Nothing Holding Us

With his installation Nothing Holding Us, Ben Zamora shows us that nothing should hold us back. Not even the disruptive shock of a totally life-changing experience, which he has depicted with dozens of light tubes in the form of an explosion that seems to be frozen in time. The painful shock of losing a loved one, or the excitement and joy you feel when a new person comes into your life; your life will never be the same again and that offers room for perspective and development.

When the pause button is hit, as it were, the immenseness, violence, and impact of such events suddenly offer us time for reflection. With this artwork, Zamora wants to celebrate the change that can follow. His explosion represents growth or expansion that brings about something beautiful, from the expansion of the universe after the big bang to the sudden opening of a flower with the first rays of sunshine.

As always, Zamora uses very minimal means - merely light tubes, or lines, in a suspended system - to create a large impact in Nothing Holding Us. The light does not move and yet the lines are positioned in a way that the spatial effect is different from every angle. While changing with your movement as a spectator, it remains equally recognisable, as though Zamora uses a simple but universal language of ‘primordial signs’ that can be intuitively understood by everyone.
