Large Diamond

Large Diamond is a part of a series of Motives. These works by Dutch artist Freerk Wilbers are the result of the balance of two opposing forces. One is scientific in nature: careful planning, structure, calculations, the laws of nature. The other is organic, unpredictable: once the sculpture is made and starts moving, I don’t know exactly what will happen. There is the influence of the light, the space, air currents.

The movement in this installation is fundamentally unpredictable, organic, different every time. Like the flow of the water, or the wind in the forest. The two forces give the work a natural, joyful aspect. The behaviour is emergent, unplanned. Perhaps the work becomes a bit alive.

About the artist

In his work, Freerk Wilbers explores the concept of chance by creating kinetic artworks and light installations from experimental research into materials, movement and mechanics. His background in (mechanical) engineering asserts itself in his art practice, informing the methods and providing the necessary tools to produce what he has in mind.
